Best Chinese restaurant in Zetland: All you need to know about Dragon Boat Festival
Dragon Boat Festival, also known as “duan wu jie” in Chinese, is celebrated on the 5th of the 5th lunar month. This year, it falls on June 20 (Georgian calendar).
The story behind this festival is a patriot poet, named Qu Yuan, who committed suicide by jumping into the Miluo River after he failed to convince the king not to ally with another kingdom. Fishermen heard him scream and went out to search for him and people threw rice into the river to stop fishes from eating his body.
That is also how the food “Zongzi” came about. It is a special type of dumpling made of glutinous rice wrapped in bamboo leaves. The bamboo leaves is an important ingredient as it gives the rice a strong fragrance of fresh bamboo. Zongzi comes with a variety of fillings from salty ones to sweet ones and shapes such like triangles and pyramids.
Because of Qu Yuan, this festival is a day to remind people about the importance of loyalty and commitment to the community.
